How can I make a large tack board / bulletin board?

I'm a teacher and would like to cover an unusable chalk board with something that would allow me to tack up student work. I've found one foot cork adhesive squares for $5 that would be perfect, but I'd rather not spend 200. Is there another material that's cheaper? The board is about 40 sq. feet.

  1. Foam?
  2. alternatively you can restore the chalkboard very cheaply. just go down to lowes, home depot or paint supply and buy chalkboard paint and paint it...
  3. This may sound a little offbeat ~ but for the expanse of space you are trying to cover, why not use strips of 2" fabric? They can be taped/pinned at the top of the board, stretched across the front, and then taped/pinned at the bottom. Space the strips about 6-9" inches apart, and then use safety pins or straight pins to hang the student artwork onto the strips of fabric. You can use chalkboard green fabric to blend in with the board or go with something a little more funky.
  4. I had the same situation recently and the final decision was to adhere inexpensive ceiling tiles to the chalk board surface...2 ft x 4 ft homasote, and then cover with a large piece of inexpensive fabric glued to the ceiling tiles with elmer's spray on glue. Looks great and attractive.

    hope this helps
